1. What I Watched in… August 2014

In the interest of full disclosure (and to generate a little content here) I thought I’d present a regular tally of what movies I managed to see in the previous month.

  4. In honor of Peter Capaldi’s debut tonight, and inspired by this T-shirt design, I present to you…

GALLIFREYNIACS (To the tune of “Animaniacs.” Duh.)

    It’s time for Gallifreyniacs!
    It’s excitement to the Max!
    The Bow Tie was Eleven’s
Number five wore his own snacks!
    They’re Gallifreyniacs!

Join Doctor Twelve and Clara as they sail through time and space
On a quest throughout the universe to find the Timelord race
Silurians are grumpy! Boe has a big ol’ face!
The Daleks fight the Cybermen and shout “EXTERMINATE!”

    They’re Gallifreyniacs!
    Follow in their TARDIS-tracks!
The giant scarf belonged to Four
    The gun was Captain Jack’s!

    They’re Gallifreynie-
    Everybody came-y!
    Saving the Day-ney!
    Gallifreyniacs!
    Don’t forget Strax!

(Be kind, I composed most of this in the shower this morning.)

  10. I speak to the Geeks…

I speak now to the Geek. My people. Those with whom I share a cultural heritage. Over the years I have heard you, many times, complain about the output of Hollywood when it comes to our beloved franchises. They do the same thing over and over again. Another soulless reboot. Once again, someone has destroyed a once-beloved childhood property.

And these complaints are not without merit. The thing is, Hollywood keeps making these movies because YOU KEEP GOING TO THEM. Movie execs speak one language: money. If you want them to do something DIFFERENT, you have to stop spending money on things you DON’T LIKE.

So if anything I’m saying sounds familiar, guys, I have a solution for you. Oh, it won’t fix everything, but it will be a start. You want them to stop trashing old franchises? You want them to take a chance on something different? You want something weird and cool instead of empty and derivative?

Then next weekend, take whatever money you were going to spend on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and instead, go to see “Guardians of the Galaxy” for a second time.
